The fifth track on their third album, A Hard Day’s Night, it was released 20 July 1964 with «If I Fell» as a single by Capitol Records in the United States, reaching No.12 on the Billboard Hot 100.
The Beatles performed «And I Love Her» just once outside Abbey Road Studios; on 14 July 1964 they played it for an edition of the BBC’s Top Gear radio show, which was broadcast two days later.

‘And I Love Her’ was one of Paul McCartney’s major contributions to the A Hard Day’s Night album, along with ‘Things We Said Today’ and ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’.
‘And I Love Her’ was written in the music room in the basement of the house in Wimpole Street, London, which belonged to Jane Asher’s parents. Lennon and McCartney wrote many of their mid-period songs together in the room.
It is likely that Asher was the inspiration behind the song. Although John Lennon claimed to have helped with the writing, although it is likely that McCartney composed the majority of it alone.
‘And I Love Her’ was one of the songs featured in The Beatles first film, A Hard Day’s Night. The group played it during the ‘studio performance’ sequence, which was filmed on 31 March 1964 at the Scala Theatre, London.
Although it became one of The Beatles’ most admired recordings following its release, the group only performed ‘And I Love Her’ once outside Abbey Road. On 14 July 1964 they played it for the BBC’s Top Gear radio show. The session took place at Broadcasting House in London, and was first broadcast two days later.
In the studio
The Beatles began recording ‘And I Love Her’ on 25 February 1964. They recorded two takes that day, with a full electric line-up, but it was evidently not the sound they were after. The second take was later released on Anthology 1.
They returned to it the next day, recording 16 takes and changing the song’s arrangement as they went along. Again they were unhappy with the results, however, and it was re-recorded on 27 February in just two takes.
The success of ‘And I Love Her’ owes much to the simplicity of its lyrics, and to the effectiveness of George Harrison’s acoustic guitar solo, for which the song’s key switches from F# minor to G minor. The middle section, meanwhile, came about in the studio, as music publisher Dick James later recalled.
Chart success
‘And I Love Her’ was released as a US single on 20 July 1964. Its b-side was ‘If I Fell’. It entered the top 40 on 8 August, spent seven weeks on the chart, and peaked at number 12.

This is a good example for one of the many mistakes Ian MacDonald has in his book (it’s a shame that everyone relies on this source, he has done such little research, rather nothing). For the correct instrumentation you have to know how the released version was recorded:
At first they recorded the two basic tracks (at the same time):
1. John’s acoustic guitar, Paul’s bass and Ringo’s bongos
2. Paul’s lead vocal, George’s claves(!)
Then overdubs were made for the two remaining tracks, these were:
3. Paul’s second vocal
4. George’s RamÃrez classical lead guitar part
(Ringo couldn’t do both, claves and bongos, because they were recorded at the same time).
I think the confusion over the bongos and claves stems from Mark Lewisohn’s Sessions book, in which he says (26 Feb 1964): “And I Love Her was quite problematic however. Ringo swapped his drums for bongos and claves midway through the session but the sound was still not quite right.” How do you know for sure that the bongos and claves were recorded together, and that George played the latter?
It’s possible that Ringo played claves on February 26, but the released version was recorded a day later with George on claves. Source: Walter Everett: “The Beatles as Musicians”, he gave a lot of detailed information about the recordings.

Whoever played the ‘Claves’ on this track they were brilliantly played. I tend to think it was Ringo because he was more of a percussionist with instruments than George was. Many songs recorded by the Fab Four Ringo played hand percussion instruments.

George’s guitar work here is beautiful.
I love how Paul finally starts acknowledge George’s musical contributuions to his songs in the new film “Living in the Material World”. He says that George came up with the main riff to this song, which I feel is such a major part of the song that he should have recieved songwriting credit.
Just to be clear, not the main riff, but that signature melodic acoustic guitar lines accompanying the verse chords. Sure it’s a major part of the song, arrangement wise, but surely it doesn’t warrant co-writing credit.
I don’t find Paul’s acknowledgment strange at all — he always gives a credit when it’s due. The problem is people can’t seem to accept when Paul claims what’s his, like the middle eight of this song, for example.

George consistently provided tasteful to the moment pastiche guitar work that shored up the bulwark of their sound which is repeated in this day by such artist’s as Lana Del Rey within the production of “West Coast”.
isn’t it though. i’ve heard that song since George died and it just doesn’t sound the same. wonder if anyone out there can tell me if the rumor i have heard, that the Beautiful Rick 12 string he is playing was stolen later on. if it hadn’t been for that song and that movie we may never have heard of Roger M and the Byrds.

I agree with you. I keep saying that McDonald is not accurate, but like you said, people relies on this source.
In “Drive my car” page I asked about your sources (here you quote Everett’s, who by the way is an excelent book), about the piano on that song.
Please don’t take everything Walter Everett wrote as gospel – his books aren’t perfect either. I think without having been there (and we all know memory can fail too) it takes a certain degree of guesswork to say precisely who played what, and while Everett seems to have given a great deal of thought to the matter, I’m not sure he’s correct every time.
For example, he claims that George Harrison added a bass guitar overdub to I Want To Hold Your Hand. He offers no clarification that it was a bass, and that George played it, yet it’s repeated as a fact elsewhere in the first book. It sounds more like a guitar line to me. Guesswork, you see.
Is not gospel, buy is more accurate than McDonald. That´s all.
I don´t know the book by Russell (1982). Dolwding (1989) quotes this book as his principal source, but is pretty inaccuratte. Then, it seems to me that McDonald just reproduce Dowlding, with some new research (not always quoted) but with the same inaccuracies.
Why would George overdub a bass part on “I Want to Hold Your Hand”, let alone in 1963? I think perhaps Walter Everett meant to say that it was Paul who overdubbed the bass and he may have typed in George by mistake.
The facts don’t add up to that error: there was no right-handed bass then and at this point in time, George was clearly not interested in playing bass.
Actually, it’s more than likely that George played his nylon-string acoustic guitar on the basic track and I don’t believe that he was really that interested in branching out to percussion at this stage. Ringo obviously would’ve overdubbed the claves.
And I Love Her,…This is my favorite Beatle song! The sheer majestic simplicity and beauty of this song in ‘A Hard Days Night’ made the movie romantically and poetically memorable for all time! This was the best song on the album and in the movie. The lighting at the end of the video, wow!!
I’m reasonably certain that quote by Dick James refers to the “A love like ours…” bridge, not the key change.
I know the vocal is double-tracked by Paul, but at times (to me) it sounds like both John and Paul singing, as opposed to just Pau.

Claves could have been played by George Martin, who used to assist them with different instruments on those days.Or any recording assistant (Mal Evans, Neil Aspinall, Norm Smith, etc,), after all it´s not such a difficult instrument to play
When watching the Live at the BBC version on YouTube, I’m pretty sure John says “I like that one, it’s one of my favorites” just before the song starts.

I think Paul tuned the 4th open E-string of his Hofner bass to drop LOW open C# or Db to get that distinctive low Db sound.
Their experiments on those early records like this including on instrument tuning really produced a very good full sound which contributes to the overall uniqueness of this song ‘And I Love Her’ as the tecnique(drop tuning) is rarely done by any other bands during those times.
George’s guitar-playing on this song sounds Spanish-influenced. I would love to find out more about the musical influence for this song.
George claimed Segovia as one of his early influences. It is quite possible that he was channeling Segovia on this one.
I’ve heard it a million times, played it a thousand, butchered it 5 billion times, and I still swoon when I hear it. WHAT A SONG. It’s magic.
And Paul is right– that riff is absolutely iconic. Four notes; terribly simple and terribly effective.

The songwriting credit on this one should be McCartney/Lennon/Harrison, IMO. Harrison’s contribution is vital to the song.
Just to clarify, Lennon didn’t say ‘It’s mine’ about the middle eight, he said: ‘The middle eight, I HELPED with that’.
That’s silly. Adding to the arrangement is not co-writing the song. The SONG is the melody and lyrics.
Even a full-fledged arranger – someone who puts the song into performable / recordable shape does not get co-writing credit.

Lovely Paul McCartney song. A real highlight of the album and film “A Hard Days Night”. As others have said brilliant guitar by George Harrison.
This song sounds easy, but deceptively so. It starts in E major, but on the ii chord. Then it quickly uses that ii chord as the sub dominant (iv)for the new key of the verse, C#minor. Then it deftly goes back to E major by way of A and B, resolving to E( IV V I).
It toggles between the relative major & minor keys throughout the song, including after the modulation, when it toggles from d minor to F major. Then it ends with a Picardy Third, D major, to make it even trickier! Pretty sophisticated and more so due to it sounding simple if you listen without analyzing it.
Just to be clear, the song is never in F# or G, as stated above. It modulates from E/c#min to F/d min at the solo. Just for a correct analysis!
There is a song (no idea which one off-hand) on the BBC album, The Honeymoon Song, where George plays a VERY similar guitar line to what he plays on And I Love Her. I can only presume he was thinking of this on the day they recorded the song as it seems too close to be a coincidence.
I listened to it again and there is definitely a very similar sounding guitar figure that I imagine George plays. I’d be more specific but it’s so obvious what I’m talking about when you hear it. What does anyone else think?
Wait did George actually play the claves or was that Ringo?
I saw Paul in concert about a year ago in the US for his One on One Tour, and I was hoping he would perform this song- and he did! It was awesome. Funny pre-song antics though- a hot looking lady in the audience was holding up a sign that said ”Paul, please sign my butt”. Well, Paul zeroed in on her and read that sign out loud to the audience. Everyone started cracking up while Paul looked at her, halfway considering doing it. He didn’t of course. Well when everyone calmed down he started singing “And I Love Her”. Very magical. Once in a while during the song, though, Paul would turn around like he was slow dancing and wiggle his butt to the audience. Again, everyone started cracking up because it was in reference to that lady holding the sign, who by this point must have been dying of embarrassment.
Magical times I’ll never forget. Thank you Sir Paul.
There really should be a section on song pages describing mixing differences between mono and stereo versions; the mono version is almost completely single-track vocals while the stereo is fully double tracked. I’d consider such a difference pretty noteworthy, but I dunno.
I know they overdubbed the vocals, and they are good, but I wish it was John on backing. As a matter of fact, they should have backed each other on everything. Their voices are magic together
Any idea if a 45RPM has the same song pressed on both A & B sides is worth anything? I have “And I Love Her/If I Fell with only one song pressed on both sides, the matrix runoffs are the same on both sides with the only difference being one number.

Get off it. You have no idea how the writer presented the question to Paul. As far as contradition…it’s a quote from Paul. Obviously he’s thinking it through – and remembering details – as he speaks. Big deal.

Paul comes off defensive regarding the “help” John said he gave to the middle eight. MikeP thinks the John vs. Paul, who wrote what, argument is silly and childish but apparently Paul thinks it’s important enough to remove John’s credit statements from his songs and add his contributions to John’s songs where there previously was none. Paul could have easily kept his petty contradictions to himself but chose to speak up. If Paul thinks it’s important than it’s not childish or silly at all. This leaves the debate open to Beatles fans to defend or comment on contradictions and inconsistencies.

John made comments on a lot of Beatles songs, so why can’t Paul? It’s ridiculous to say that if Paul does it, it’s petty, but it’s fine if John does it.
George’s riff may be iconic but it seems no big thing to me. From the first time I heard the song the riff never seemed that removed from the chord structure of the melody itself. That’s how it was probably perceived at the time of recording but none of us were there in the studio so its anyone’s guess how it unfolded. What’s more strange is Paul’s attitude to the song. Here he says it’s the first ballad he impressed himself with while John regarded it as Paul’s first Yesterday. Yet in a recent interview he said the song wasn’t anything without George’s riff and that George Martin was looking for an intro – no mention of a middle eight. Whether McCartney is bowing to pressure from the underrated George deserves writing credit for XY & Z brigade or whether it lets him off the hook for writing it about Jane Asher, who knows. He has always seemed uncomfortable performing the song…next we’ll be hearing Harrison wrote the whole thing. It does seem a bit of a slap in the face for all those who have done wonderful cover versions of his nothing song, presumably because of its melody and lyrics, not its riff. I think McCartney sold his artistic soul down the river here.
What an absolute wonderful recording. I think the “Claves” really make the tempo on this track what it is. Whether is was Ringo or George they were played brilliantly.

After all, «Michelle,» «Here, There And Everywhere,» «The Long And Winding Road,» «I’ll Follow The Sun,» «I Will» and the monumental hit «Yesterday» were all written primarily, if not totally, by Paul McCartney. One can easily point to John’s «In My Life» or George’s «Something» as examples otherwise, but Paul is definitely the winner in the ‘ballads’ sweepstakes.
Before the soundtrack to «A Hard Day’s Night» burst on the scene, Paul’s songwriting was mostly confied to writing «eyeball to eyeball» (as Lennon would call it) with John in collaborative efforts. When he did faction off to write by himself, the songs would usually be rockers, such as «I Saw Her Standing There» and «Can’t Buy Me Love.» His reputation as a ‘balladeer’ began with the inclusion of «And I Love Her» on the movie soundtrack album. This soft, acoustic sentimental love song stuck out like a sore thumb and made everyone take notice of what this long-haired British rock group was capable of.
Since the movie «A Hard Day’s Night» helped to individualize the characteristics of each Beatle in everyone’s mind («the cute one,» «the witty one,» «the quiet one» etc.), the fans were quick to judge Paul as the «melodic, soft one» of the group. While history has shown this characterization to be false, evidenced numerous times throughout The Beatles’ career (Paul’s «Helter Skelter» being the most obvious example), the fact still remains that McCartney was a true master of the ‘ballad’.
Songwriting History
«And I Love Her» was written in the basement music room at Jane Asher‘s parents home at 57 Wimpole St. in London. Paul had just moved in with the Ashers and frequently met there with John to write songs, although this song was apparently written by McCartney alone, at least initially. «I wrote this on my own,» McCartney stated, «I can actually see Margaret Asher’s upstairs drawing room. I remember playing it there.»
The song was written in February of 1964 during either their two days at home between their Paris and America trips (February 5th through 7th), or after their return trip home from conquering the US (February 22nd through 25th). These were the only dates that Paul could have been at the Ashers’ home in London during February.
«It was the first ballad I impressed myself with,» Paul explained in his book ‘Many Years From Now.’ «It’s got nice chords in it, ‘Bright are the stars that shine, dark is the sky. ‘ I like the imagery of the stars and the sky. It was a love song really. The ‘And‘ in the title was an important thing, ‘And I Love Her’, it came right out of left field, you were right up to speed the minute you heard it. The title comes in the second verse and it doesn’t repeat. You would often go to town on the title, but this was almost an aside, ‘Oh. and I love you.’ It still holds up and George played really good guitar on it. It worked very well.»
Lennon equally admired the song, stating in 1980 «I consider it (Paul’s) first ‘Yesterday.’ You know, the big ballad in ‘A Hard Day’s Night.'» One thing about John’s explanatory interviews is that his memory seems to slip according to the year he was interviewed. At one point he even claimed to have completely written Paul’s «Two Of Us.» In the case of «And I Love Her» he stated in 1972, «Both of us wrote it. The first half was Paul’s and the middle-eight (or bridge) is mine.» In 1980, he changed his story slightly, saying «The middle eight, I helped with that.»
Paul purges his memory to clarify the matter. «I’m not sure if John worked on that at all. The middle eight is mine. I would say that John probably helped with the middle-eight, but he can’t say ‘It’s mine.’ I wrote this on my own.»
One thing that helps to put this to rest is a quote from their music publisher Dick James, who happened to be there during one of their earlier attempts at recording the song. «They were laying down the tracks and doing the melody lines of the song ‘And I Love Her.’ It was a very simple song and quite repetitive. George Martin and I looked at each other and the same thought sparked off in both our minds. It was proving to be, although plain and a warm and sympathetic song, just too repetitive with the same phrase repeating. George Martin told the boys, ‘Both Dick and I feel that the song is just lacking in the middle. It’s too repetitive and it needs something to break it up.'»
Dick James continues: «I think it was John who shouted, ‘OK, let’s have a tea break’ and John and Paul went to the piano and, while Mal Evans was getting tea and some sandwiches, the boys worked at the piano. Within half an hour they wrote, there before our very eyes, a very constructive middle to a very commercial song. Although we know it isn’t long, it’s only a four-bar middle, nevertheless it was just the right ingredient to break up the over-repetitive effect of the original melody.»
Since Paul and Jane Asher’s romance had just bloomed shortly before, it can easily be assumed that the song was written with her in mind. Paul insists, though, that this wasn’t the case. «It’s just a love song, it wasn’t for anyone,» Paul proclaimed in 1984.
Nonetheless, Paul remains quite proud of this song. «Having the title start in mid-sentence, I thought that was clever. it was a nice tune, that one. I still like it.»
Recording History
The first day that The Beatles utilized in earnest for recording tracks for their upcoming first motion picture was February 25th, 1964. Two sessions were booked in EMI Studio Two for this day, the first of which finished off “Can’t Buy Me Love” and its B-side “You Can’t Do That.” The later session, from 2:30 to 5:30 pm, bore no real fruit except for the introduction of two new songs that would eventually be used in the movie; “I Should Have Known Better” and “And I Love Her.”
Two takes of “And I Love Her” were attempted on this day, only one of which made it through to the end. The song was much different from what we’ve come to know, being that they envisioned it in their usual guitar/ bass/ drums format. although considered finished at that time, it did not contain the bridge, only verses and a guitar solo section before the last verse. It didn’t even have a suitable ending worked out at this point.
The song was developed to a certain degree, though, as it contained George Harrison’s plucking guitar runs in most of the verses (played on his new Rickenbacker 12-string), as well as the rising key change for the solo section as we’re used to hearing in the final version. The guitar solo was even identical to the finished version at this stage, however clumsily played, following the melody line of the verses. They probably felt that they could keep working out the arrangement in the studio like they did with other songs, but they apparently thought it just wasn’t feeling right and left it for the next day.
That next day, February 26th, saw The Beatles back in EMI Studio Two from 2:30 to 5:30 pm to work on the two songs left over from the previous day. “I Should Have Known Better” did get completed, but “And I Love Her” still wasn’t good enough. They recorded another 17 takes,takes 3 through 19, which saw the song evolving into what became the final arrangement. Midway through the sessions, Ringo switched to playing bongos instead of drums. It was apparently during this session that John and Paul wrote the bridge (as related above in the quote from Dick James), which added a new dynamic to the arrangement and took the song’s length to over two minutes for the first time.
Their struggles on this day solidified the shape the song would eventually take, but they still weren’t happy with it. When engineer Norman Smith announced “Take 14,” Paul quipped “Ha, take 50!” indicating the frustration they were experiencing. Once again, they decided to leave it for the next day.
The Beatles entered EMI Studio Two the next day (February 17th) to finally complete the song. In Martin Scorsese’s documentary “George Harrison: Living In The Material World,” Paul explains much detail as to the group’s arrangement procedures during their early recording sessions and, in the process, reveals an interesting detail concerning “And I Love Her.”:
“We’d go in the studio, ten in the morning, and this was the first time George and Ringo had heard any of the songs. This is how good they were. So John and I would go, ‘It goes like this’… and they’d go, ‘um, hum.’ George would cop the chords…not writing them down, it’s just like ‘yeah, right…I can see what you’re doing, ‘cause I’m one of you, you know, I didn’t write it but I see what you did.’ And Ringo would just stand around with his sticks and just ‘tick-a-tic-tic,’ do a little thing.”
«And I was just thinking actually about my song, ‘And I Love Her.’ ‘I give her all my love,’ I had that. But then George comes in with, ‘doo-doo-doo-doo.” Now you think about that – THAT’s the song! But you know, he made that up on the session, ‘cause he nicked the chords and we just said, ‘it needs a riff.’ I didn’t write that!”
With the song’s signature riff in place, only two takes were needed during the first session booked for this day (10:00 am to 1:00 pm) to finish it off, this time with a completely acoustic arrangement. George skillfully played his parts on his Jose Ramirez acoustic guitar (as he used on his excellent solo in “Till There Was You” the year prior) while Ringo remained on bongos. The second take of this day (take 21) was deemed the best, which then required a couple overdubs; one to double-track Paul’s vocals and the other for the claves (percussive wooden sticks) overdub, which presumably was played by Ringo although some claim George may have played them. By approximately 11 am, this three day project was finally completed.
The mono mix of the song was made on March 3rd in the control room of EMI Studio One by producer George Martin and engineers Norman Smith and A.B. Lincoln. As well as being used for the mono releases of the song America, it was shipped to United Artists Pictures for use during the making of their movie “A Hard Day’s Night.” The EMI staff took care to use Paul’s double-tracked vocals only in strategic places, which in this case was only when he sang the title of the song and during the bridge.
Work was also done on the song on June 9th in the control room of EMI Studio Three. Mono tape copies were made of all the movie soundtrack songs to distribute to both American record labels that would be releasing these songs, namely Capitol Records and United Artists Records. This was done by George Martin, Norman Smith and 2nd engineer Ken Scott.
June 22nd saw a marathon mixing session for the “A Hard Day’s Night” album, creating all the stereo mixes of the songs as well as many mono mixes not done yet. Two mixes of “And I Love Her” were made on this day; a mono mix for the British album and a stereo mix for general release everywhere, both of these featuring Paul’s vocals double tracked throughout except for the lines “bright are the stars that shine, dark is the sky” in the third verse, where apparently Paul didn’t double-track his vocals. This mixing session was attended only by George Martin, Norman Smith and 2nd engineer Geoff Emerick.
A note should be made concerning some controversy regarding the German version of the album “ Something New ” that contains a stereo version of the song with six guitar riffs at the end instead of four as contained in all other releases of the song. No other stereo mix was made, so therefore an editing job must have been done for some unknown reason to artificially extend the song for this release. The guitar does appear a little softer on the left channel, but the centered vocals are a little more to the right of the mix, which indicates that the balance was off a little and not that there was a different mix sent to Germany. This version did get released in the US on the 1980 album «Rarities.»
The Beatles made one more recording of «And I Love Her,» this being made specifically for BBC radio. They recorded the song on July 14th, 1964 in Studios B7/S2 of Broadcasting House in London between 7 and 11 pm for a new radio show entitled «Top Gear,» which was produced by Bernie Andrews and broadcast on July 16th between 10 and 11:55 pm.
Not to be forgotten is Paul McCartney’s live recording of «And I Love Her» that occurred on January 25th, 1991, this rendition being performed during his MTV Unplugged show, which was released on his “Unplugged (The Official Bootleg)” album.
Song Structure and Style
«And I Love Her» appears to fall into the standard Beatle structure of verses and bridges, which is quite usual for this early time period in their songwriting career. But as we’ve seen through examination of their catalog, idiosyncrasies rule the day. One difference here is that the bridge only appears once whereas, when we expect it to appear again after a third verse, a guitar solo emerges in a raised key. Nonetheless, we have here a ‘verse/ verse/ bridge/ verse’ (or aaba) format with an instrumental section and a final verse added in.
We start out, though, with a four measure introduction that nicely premiers the sparse acoustic arrangement of the song. Harrison’s gentle guitar runs segue appropriately into the first ten-measure verse which, as does the rest of the song, emphasizes the intimate solo vocal performance of McCartney. A second verse then appears which mimics the first in structure and instrumentation except for George’s delicate arpeggio that adds a degree of elegance to the proceedings. Since the first verse ends with the simple phrase «I love her,» this second verse is the first time we hear the title of the song «And I love her.»
The simple eight-measure bridge (which Dick James mistakenly referred to as a «four-bar middle») now appears for the only time in the song, which adds a beautiful variance to break up what could have become monotony, as witnessed in the earlier «Anthology 1» version taped two days before. Harrison adds even more variance by accentuating the one-beat of each measure with a Spanish-like strum on his Jose Ramirez guitar before transitioning the bridge into a third verse with his signature guitar run.
After a third identically structured verse, which features the same delicate guitar arpeggio from the second verse (although starting from the second measure to allow George to finish the introductory guitar run), the song takes a half-key shift upward for the guitar solo. This section is played to the chord structure of the verse right down to the actual melody line being performed exquisitely on acoustic guitar.
After a repeat of the final verse, which is identical except for the raised key, we now see the reappearance of the introduction to complete the cycle. This conclusion extends the concept of the introduction from four measures to six measures, ending with a Baroque-sounding twist; a resolve in a major key. This solidifies the question as to whether the song as a whole is in a major or minor key. Since all of the verses end in a major key when the title of the song is heard, as well as the song itself ending in a major key, the argument is settled. «And I Love Her» can be said to be in a major key. That’s my story and I’m sticking with it!
Lyrically the song can be described as «moon-in-June,» or quite cliché for a love song. Keeping in mind that this was a jumping-off point for McCartney into ballad writing, his intricate sensitivity, such as that seen in his 1966 masterpiece «Here, There And Everywhere,» was yet to come.
The entire lyric was written as if the female in question was not present, relating the singer’s feelings to a third party (or to all of us). This is the case throughout, except for the later-written bridge which is sung directly to his girl, as evidenced in the line «as long as I have you near me.» It can be assumed that this was unintentional, since the bridge was hastily written in the studio and contained the only input from John Lennon in the writing of the song.
As stated earlier, McCartney was quite proud of the simply stated lyrics in this song. He also was quick to notice when his idea for the title of the song was used elsewhere. «Having the title start in midsentence, I thought that was clever,» Paul mused in 1984. «Well, Perry Como did ‘And I Love You So‘ many years later. Tried to nick the idea. I like that.»
Little did Paul realize, credit for ‘nicking the idea’ should actually go to Don McLean of «American Pie» fame who actually wrote the Perry Como song. Also of note, is John’s 1966 composition «And Your Bird Can Sing,» which also has a title that starts in mid sentence.
Musicianship-wise, George gets the biggest nod for his simple-but-effective acoustic lead guitar work. After three days of practice in the studio, he came through well rehearsed and impressive, adding a classy touch to an intimate ballad.
Paul deserves due credit for his melancholy vocal work which comes across with convincing sincerity. His bass work, while simplistic in comparison to what he’s recorded even up to this point, is suitable to the occasion and was done simultaneously with his spot-on vocal delivery.
Lennon holds down the rhythm quite nicely with acoustic guitar throughout. He strums somewhat urgently at times, such as during the last two measures of each verse, but this adds a nice quality that I’m sure we wouldn’t want to do without. Ringo’s obligatory bongo playing works nicely to create the perfect ambience for this delicate piece of music.
American Releases
June 26th, 1964 is when US audiences got their first taste of «And I Love Her.» United Artists Records rush-released their soundtrack album for «A Hard Day’s Night» utilizing only the mono masters received from EMI around June 10th, 1964, this album topping the Billboard album charts for 14 weeks. To create a «High Fidelity Stereo» mix for the stereo release of the album, they transferred the mono mix of the song featuring Paul’s single-tracked vocals to two seperate channels and boosted the bass frequencies on the left channel while raising the treble frequencies on the right, slightly raising the volume of George’s guitar solo on the right channel to simulate the stereo effect. United Artists kept this album in print until the label was purchased by Capitol Records in 1978, Capitol beginning their reprints of this soundtrack album on August 1st, 1980. This album got its compact disc release on January 21st, 2014, both the mono and stereo versions of the album being contained on a single CD.
Capitol Records were hot on their heels to expose America to the song in a great way. On July 20th, they released their album «Something New» which featured four songs from the movie including «And I Love Her.» The mono edition of the album included the March 3rd, 1964 mono mix featuring Paul’s single-tracked vocals, while the stereo edition included the standard mono mix with Paul’s double-tracked vocals. While it didn’t outsell the soundtrack album, it was highly successful and peaked at #2 on the album charts right under the United Artists album. This album was also released on an individual compact disc on January 21st, 2014, both the mono and stereo versions being contained on one CD.
Simultaneously on July 20th, Capitol released the song as a single with «If I Fell» as the B-side. This helped give another song from the movie exposure which, in turn, meant more sales for Capitol in the long run. The primary attention on the singles charts was on their recently released single «A Hard Day’s Night,» but «And I Love Her» still had a very good chart response, reaching #12 in Billboard.
Sometime in 1967, Capitol released Beatles music on a brand new but short-lived format called «Playtapes.» These tape cartidges did not have the capability to include entire albums, so a truncated four-song version of «Something New» was released in this portable format, «And I Love Her» being one of these songs. Around the same time, United Artists Records released an eight-song «Playtape» version of the soundtrack to «A Hard Day’s Night» which also included «And I Love Her.» These «Playtapes» are highly collectable today.
The next actual American release of the song wasn’t until April 2nd, 1973 on the first «greatest hits» package entitled «The Beatles/1962-1966» (aka «The Red Album»). This very successful album spent eight weeks in the top ten of the Billboard album charts, peaking at #3. The stereo mix of «And I Love Her» was included on this album as with the compact disc release in 1993. The re-release of the CD set on October 19th, 2010 features a remastered stereo mix of the song.
This didn’t stop Capitol from including the song in another compilation album they wanted to spring on American record buyers. On November 21st, 1977 they released an album of Beatles ballads entitled «Love Songs,» which didn’t do quite as well but nonetheless peaked at #24 on the Billboard album charts and ended up selling three million units.
As mentioned above, Capitol was motivated by the British release of an album of Beatles rarities to release one of their own in America. The US «Rarities» album, released on March 24th, 1980, featured the version of «And I Love Her» that was contained on the German «Something New» album which had a few skillfully edited extra measures at the end. The implication was that this was how the song was recorded, but in actuality these extra measures were edited on in Germany for some reason, creating a unique but artificial «rarity.»
In order to bring in even more Beatles sales, Capitol came up with another compilation idea. «Reel Music» was released on March 22nd, 1982 and contained highlights from all five Beatles motion pictures (including «Magical Mystery Tour»). «And I Love Her» was one of four songs taken from the «A Hard Day’s Night» movie to make this compilation album, which did quite well by peaking at #19 on the Billboard album charts. Over 12,000 promotional copies were also printed, these being on translucent gold vinyl.
The first time the original British «A Hard Day’s Night» album was made available in the US was the » Original Master Recording » vinyl edition released through Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab in February of 1987. This album included «And I Love Her» and was prepared utilizing half-speed mastering technology from the original master tape on loan from EMI. This version of the album was only available for a short time and is quite collectible today.
February 26th, 1987 was the date that the actual «A Hard Day’s Night» album was released in its entirety in the US. This was the debut of the album on compact disc, which featured the original British mono mix, this also being released on vinyl in the US on July 21st, 1987. The stereo edition was released on the remastered version on September 9th, 2009 on CD, the vinyl version coming out on November 13th, 2012.
On June 30th, 1992, Capitol released a box set entitled «Compact Disc EP Collection» which contained the mono mix of «And I Love Her» because of its inclusion on the original British EP «Extracts From The Film A Hard Day’s Night.»
The highly anticipated » Anthology 1» album was released on November 21st, 1995 by Apple Records. Beatles fans were all surprised to hear the only complete take of the song (take 2) that was recorded on their first attempt at its recording on February 25th, 1964. It revealed how different the song originally sounded as well as showing that a good song can be done many different ways and still work well. This track was definitely a highlight on this very successful #1 album. A sampler disc of this album was also distributed to US radio stations just before its release. This single disc also contains this version of «And I Love Her.»
The box set «The Capitol Albums, Vol. 1,» which was released on November 15th, 2009, contains the song in both stereo and mono as originally heard on the album «Something New.»
The remastered mono mix of «And I Love Her» is included in the September 9th, 2009 released box set «The Beatles In Mono.»
In promotion of the 2014 box set «The US Albums,» a 25-song sampler CD was manufactured for limited release on January 21st, 2014, this containing the mono mix of «And I Love Her.»
Not to be forgotten, though, is Paul’s «Unplugged (The Official Bootleg)» album that was released on May 20th, 1991. This stripped-down performance for the «MTV Unplugged» series featured «And I Love Her,» which was the first time he performed the song anywhere outside of The Beatles. This limited edition album did very well in the US, peaking at #14 on the Billboard charts.
Live Performances
This song had an extremely short performance life for the Beatles. After one BBC radio recording and broadcast (detailed above under «Recording History»), they performed it on the British live variety television show «Blackpool Night Out» on July 19th at the ABC Theatre in Blackpool. Other than its appearance in the movie «A Hard Day’s Night,» this was the full extent to which the Beatles promoted «And I Love Her.» Not that it needed it anyway, because its popularity gave it a spot in their hugely successful ‘greatest hits’ package «The Beatles/1962-1966.»
McCartney also thought to periodically perform the song live during his solo career. As stated above, he played it on his segment for «MTV’s Unplugged,» which was recorded on January 25th, 1991, and also during his brief «Unplugged Tour» of that year, which began on May 8th and concluded on July 24th. Paul included the song in his «New World Tour» of 1993, but only featured it in the first four performances of this tour (February 18th through 23rd). His December 2009 «Good Evening Europe Tour» also featured the song, which stretched from December 2nd through the 22nd, as well as periodically during his extensive «Up And Coming Tour,» which began on March 28th, 2010 and finished on June 10th, 2011. Then, his «Out There!» tour, which began on May 4th, 2013 and concluded on October 22nd, 2015, included the song throughout the entire tour, as did his «One On One» tour, which stretched from April 13th, 2016 to December 16th, 2017.
Conclusion
This simple but stirring and gentle ballad shows for the first time the variance of what Lennon and McCartney could conjure up within the confines of one album. They would be later known for their «highs and lows,» «peaks and valleys» on their albums, such as the range of genres on the «White Album» (from «Helter Skelter» to «Blackbird» to «Honey Pie»). While the gentleness of «A Taste Of Honey» and «Till There Was You» from their first two albums were evidences of this, they resorted to cover songs to display the variance. With «And I Love Her» they display that they have this capability right in their own arsenal.
At any rate, so begins the magic of the McCartney ballad. The balance between the melody and lyrics reveal this tune to be among the best he will ever write, and one that he rightfully has remained proud of untill this day.

To, что Пол любил рок-н-ролл, не означало, что он с презрением относился к поп-музыке. Ему нравилось то, что исполняли группы двадцатых и тридцатых годов, которые его отец слушал дома, то, что исполняли в различных концертных залах в сороковых и пятидесятых и ставшие привычными песни, которые его родственники пели, собираясь вокруг фортепиано дома.
Изначально Пол хотел написать песню, название которой начиналось бы с середины предложения. Он написал слова и пришел к Джону за помощью. Кстати говоря, Пол не смог не заметить, что почти десять лет спустя Перри Комо записал песню под названием «And I Love You So».
Запись началась в феврале 1964 года, и это была первая целиком акустическая композиция (Ринго играл на бонго). В фильме A Hard Day’s Night она звучит в тот момент, когда парни записывают ее для телевизионного шоу.
За месяц до записи этой песни Джейн Ашер говорила с американским писателем Майклом Брауном: «Проблема (с Полом) заключается в том, что он требует, чтобы его обожали, причем как фанаты, так и я. Он слишком эгоистичен. Это его самая большая проблема. Он не видит, что мои чувства к нему самые искренние, а что чувства фанатов — это просто иллюзия». Песня написана Полом Маккартни и посвящена его подруге актрисе Джей Эшер (Jane Asher). Изначально песня не содержала средние 8 тактов и знаменитый гитарный рифф, что слышно на первом варианте, помещенном на альбом Anthology 1 Продюсер Джордж Мартин уже во время записи предложил дописать центральную часть и Джон с Полом сделали это за полчаса, а Джордж Харрисон сочинил рифф, который по словам Маккартни «ошеломляюще изменил песню». Песню записывали три дня с 25 по 27 февраля. В первый день Харрисон играл на электрогитаре, а Ринго Старр на ударной установке. На следующий день была написана средняя часть, электрогитара заменена на две акустических (Джорджа и Джона), а Ринго пересел на бонги. В завершающий день была сделана окончательная запись, добавлены палочки «клаве» Ринго и продублирован голос Маккартни. Сингл вышел только в США с песней «If I Fell» и длостиг 12 места в чарте «Billboard Hot 100».

John Lennon назвал «And I Love Her» первой «Yesterday» Paul McCartney.

В Abbey Road Studios и течение трех дней музыканты испробовали различные варианты аранжировки композиции, пока не нашли оптимальный, записанный в студии в тот же день, что и «Tell Me Why».
Самая простая, нежная и чувственная песня из всех, что группа на тот момент исполняла, построена в основном на акустической инструментовке.
Эта песня, хотя и была довольно популярной, вне стен Abbey Road исполнялась всего лишь однажды: 14 июля 1964 года The Beatles сыграли её на шоу Top gear BBC.
Фактически автором всей песни является Paul McCartney, однако John Lennon также внес свой вклад в ее написание. В одном из интервью журналу Playboy John Lennon признался, что помог Paul McCartney написать переход A love like ours / Could never die / As long as I / Have you near me.
