Getting Started with Partiality Modding

This tutorial is outdated! For creating code mods for Rain World, it is highly recommended to create a BepPlugin instead of a Partiality Mod. You can find all the information you need to get started in the #modding-resources channel of the Rain World Discord Server [ ]

Introduction [ ]

The purpose of this guide is to help you get started making your first hook mod with Partiality and is more or less a more beginner friendly version of the existing Partiality Modding guide which you can find (Here)

You will be guided through installing Visual Studio 2019 Community (VSC) and setting up your first project for use with Rain World modding. By the end of this tutorial you should have a basic understanding of how hook mods work and how to make them. What you decide to make after that is up to you.

Important note: You are expected to have at least a basic understanding of programming. This guide will not teach you the C# programming language. However, once you have completed this tutorial you can use modding as an opportunity to learn, set your sights on a simple goal and work your way to understanding what you need to do to make it happen.

Setting up Visual Studio [ ]

In order to make our mods we’ll be using Visual Studio Community 2019, but we’ll need to install certain components so that we can work with Rain World. First download VSC from the link below and follow the steps to install what we need.

Download and install Visual Studio Community 2019 [ ]

Once everything is installed you will be prompted to sign in with a Microsoft or Github account. You can click «Not now, maybe later» but will be restricted to 30-day trial period, after which you will have to sign in.

Your First Project [ ]

The settings we need for our new project.

With Visual Studio installed we can now begin setting up our new project:

Adding References [ ]

Before we can start making our mod we’ll need add some references in Visual Studio that will let us interact with Rain World’s code, Partiality and more. We’ll need four references in total which you can get by following the steps below:

Working with Partiality [ ]

Before we dive into modifying Rain World’s code, we first need to set up a couple classes so that Partiality can properly interact with and apply our mod to the game.

Direct your eyes to the Solution Explorer in the right hand pane of Visual Studio, at the bottom of the list you should see «Class1.cs» which is created by default with each new project, this should be what you are currently looking at in the main view. If isn’t, simply double-click «Class1.cs» to open it. We’ll be repurposing this class for some initial setup.

And with that, we are finally ready to start modding. The next section will run you through a simple example so you can get a basic understanding of how to make your mods.

Simple Example [ ]

With Visual Studio installed, our references added and our mod able to be read by Partiality, we can finally start adding code that will modify the game itself. For the purpose of this tutorial we’ll be doing something simple, changing the Survivor’s food meter:

Inside the curly brackets underneath Patch() is where we’ll hook the existing Food Meter code, for this we’ll be using our old friend DnSpy which if you don’t have already, can be downloaded from Here.

Inside SlugcatStats you should see something called «SlugcatFoodMeter». This is what we’ve been looking for so select it from the list.

This code here controls the amount of food each Slugcat can store and how much they need to hibernate. The cases refer to each Slugcat. Whenever you see the Slugcats being referred to by a number, 0 is Survivor, 1 is Monk and 2 is Hunter. The first number in the brackets is the max amount of food the Slugcat can eat and the second is the amount needed to hibernate.

So, we know where the code for the food meter is and what we need to change, but how do we do it? This is where we create our first hook.

Within the brackets for the Patch() Method we created, type the following:

Once you’ve finished typing += you’ll be prompted to press TAB, do this and the code needed to create the hook will be added for us.

You’ll notice that as we were typing, Visual Studio offered suggestions for existing classes in Rain World’s code, you’ll be using this feature a lot.

Your class should now look like this:

The new code added below our Patch() Method is where you’ll make any changes to what you just hooked. Head back over to DnSpy and copy the contents of the original «SlugcatFoodMeter» and paste it inside the brackets of our hook, making sure to delete/overwrite the «throw new NotImplementedException();» that was created by default.

Once that’s pasted in you’ll see that all instances of «IntVector2″ are underlined in red, that’s because currently our FoodMeter Class doesn’t contain a definition for what an «IntVector2» is. If you mouse-over one of the underlined pieces of code you will a get a pop up in which you can click «Show potential fixes» and from there select «Using RWCustom;. You can alternatively add the following line to the top of the class:

With that done, the class should now look like this:

Now we can change The Survivor’s food meter to be whatever we want, so do that now. Just make sure the second number in the brackets isn’t higher than the first one.

Our first hook is now finished! There is only one more step before we are ready to compile our mod. Navigate back to our MyMod Class (making sure to save our changes). Within our OnEnable() method we need to add our FoodMeter hook. So simply add the following:

Navigate to where your compiled «MyMod.dll» has been saved and copy it to your Rain World mods folder. If you previously changed your build location to the mods folder as mentioned above then it should be there already.

Open up Partiality Launcher and enable your mod and click «Apply Mods». Fire up Rain World, Start or Continue a saved game for Survivor and take a look at the fruits of our Labor. You’ve just created a Partiality Mod!

Recently there’s been some silly drama on our site that was sparked by someone uploading a mod for Spider-Man Remastered. The mod replaced the very few Pride flags the game actually has with the already prevalent USA flag texture from the game. The mod was removed from Nexus Mods and the author was banned.

To address the banning, which is what a lot of people want to focus on, the mod was uploaded by a sock puppet account (i.e. a newly made account by someone who already has an accou.

Morrowind is turning 20 today! To celebrate this anniversary, our good friend darkelfguy is running a special edition of his yearly Morrowind May Modathon and we’re also giving away fabulous prizes in our Morrowind quiz!

Starfield, the first game in a brand new series from Bethesda Game Studios, is coming to PC and Xbox in November and while that may seem to be a long way off yet, we’re already excitedly preparing for the release.

Update 12 May 2022: Bethesda has announced on Twitter that Starfield has been delayed until the first half of 2023.

If you haven’t heard about it yet, Starfield is going to be the debut entry in an entirely new franchise and marks the first single-player RPG.

In the feature, we are looking at a very special project for the game Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord. The mod in question is called «Life in Calradia» by the author OneDrop. If you haven’t played Bannerlord, it is a medieval-style action strategy game involving the huge world map of Calradia, several factions inspired by human history, hundreds of Nobles, and an assortment of beautifully created towns, castles, and villages.

However, those of you who have played will know that one.

I’m sure you’re all aware of the horrible assault on Ukraine that started on 24 February. Along with the leadership and people of the vast majority of countries in the world, we strongly condemn this unprovoked attack on another sovereign nation at the orders of Russian president Vladimir Putin.

Today, we’re excited to announce that Skywind, the project that is re-imagining The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind in the Skyrim Creation Engine, is coming to the Nexus!

In the past, Nexus discussion on the project has been moderated due to Bethesda’s stance that exchanging assets between their titles is not a situation they can condone or legally support. So for the past three years, the Skywind developers have been working tirelessly to rectify this by creating brand-new mod.

Dev Tools

The Dev Tools are a collection of in-game tools used by the developers for testing the game and editing map properties. They are a good starting point for modders, as the tools are fairly easy to use, and provide some basic modding capabilities. They can be installed from the Tools section of RainDB.

Dev Tools Controls [ ]

The following keyboard shortcuts are available for use once the Dev Tools have been activated in-game.

Key	Function
O	Enables/Disables Dev Mode. While Dev mode is active, some yellow text will be shown at the top of the screen showing that it is active, and also showing the current map name.
H	Opens/closes the main Dev Tool interface.
M	Shows various useful debug information, like number of creatures active in the region, exact time left until the rain, creature relationship statuses, numerical identifiers for pipes and spawn locations, and pixel/tile coordinates at the mouse location.
P	Displays tile accessibility for each creature type. Use arrow keys to select a creature type, then click a tile in the room to see every place the creature can reach from that tile.
Q	Fills Slugcat’s food meter by one pip.
R	Restarts the cycle from the shelter.
A	Runs the simulation in slow-mode while the button is held.
S	Run the simulation in fast-mode while the button is held.
V	Teleports Slugcat to the location of the mouse.
W	Flings slugcat in the general direction of mouse motion.
F	Pulls batflies towards the location of the mouse.
B	Drags all creatures/entites to the location of the mouse (except Slugcat and Batflies).
G	Flings all vultures skywards.
N	Offsets the camera based on the mouse position.
E	Sets the migratory destination of every creature in the region to the current room.
U	Reloads all sound samples.
I	Shows a log of all sound effects played.
K	Opens ConsoleLog.txt (only Extended Devtools).

Additional Dev Tools commands available on the title screen/region select screens:

Key	Function
N+Jump	Allows you to reposition the layers in the background image with the mouse.
B	Saves the new positions of the layers to file.

Additional Dev Tools commands available in cutscenes (not useful in the current version of Dev Tools, as you can’t save these changes, and the cutscene doesn’t pause while this mode is active, like it probably is supposed to)

Key	Function
M	Activate/Deactivate cutscene editing mode.
Left Click	Select and drag keyframes around.
J	Add a new keyframe.
K	Remove a keyframe.
O	Change depth of selected keyframe.
L	Offset all keyframes.

BepInEx4RW Mod manager

Current state of the project: acceptable stability. Assistance in troubleshooting is appreciated.

HOW TO INSTALL:

Download latest release, unpack somewhere (does not have to be inside game’s folder).

HOW TO USE:

Press «Select path», navigate to Rain World’s root folder, press Apply. If you do not have BepInEx installed, you can use AUDB tab Download mods / install bepinex to get it in one click.

Mod list is refreshed every time you focus main window. Allows setting tags and descriptions for mods to search through later, in case you have a gigantic modset that’s too annoying to get through manually.

The app has a bunch of additional tools, check Options menu.

Starting from 0.1.7, self-updates to latest stable release from this repo if needed.

Update 12 May 2022: Bethesda has announced on Twitter that Starfield has been delayed until the first half of 2023.

If you haven’t heard about it yet, Starfield is going to be the debut entry in an entirely new franchise and marks the first single-player RPG.

Applications are now closed for this position.

We’re naming this role the «Office Manager» role, however, it will involve a range of different tasks that could fit into all sorts of job descriptions, including «Facilities Manager».

We’re very happy to say that the community came out strong in support of Ukraine raising over £6,500 (

However, those of you who have played will know that one.

At this moment the people of Ukraine are suffering the consequences of Putin’s war of aggression which is bringing nothing but death, destruction, and displacement to countless familie.

Earlier this year, we put out a call for a new Community Manager to join our team at Nexus Mods. We completed the hiring process for the new CM in June and our new recruit has since been eagerly working away in the background, helping us manage the day-to-day of running the website, and learning the ropes. There’s been quite a lot going on here at Nexus Mods over the last few months, so they’re definitely overdue a proper introduction. So, without further ado.

We’re always working on creating tools and experiences which continue to support a positive modding community, make modding more accessible and give creators the ability to share their own creations. This can be through our website, Vortex or something else entirely. To help us achieve our mission, we’re looking to hire four new talented individuals to join us at our office in Exeter, UK.

Working at Nexus Mods means the projects you help bring to life will be used by millions of gam.

Nexus Mods first started offering Premium Membership as an option to users all the way back in 2007. Since then, it has been an invaluable source of income for the site that has allowed us to continue to host our services, hire staff, create NMM and Vortex, expand to over 1,300 more games and give back to mod authors via our Donation Points system, among many other things. Without it, the site simply would not exist.

It has been a couple of years since I last updated you all on the more internal goings on at Nexus Mods so I’ve decided to drum up enough enthusiasm to write another of my long-winded, banal «blog posts» on the matter. I wasn’t able to get around to doing one last year and I am aware that some of you actually like to punish yourselves, but if you’re like me and just like to skim read, here’s the TL;DR:

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated UI/UX Designer who is passionate about creating practical, simple and human solutions to complex problems which will help design the future of Nexus Mods – a service used by millions of players worldwide.

Together with the front-end team, you will be expected to work alongside our back-end development teams to release new features and to also take full responsibility for the look, feel and user experience of the Nexus Mods prod.

Recently we have seen a spate of provocative and troll mods being uploaded based around current sociopolitical issues in the United States. As we get closer to the US election in November we expect this trend to increase as it did this time 4 years ago.

Considering the low quality of the mods being uploaded, the polarising views they express and the fact that a small but vocal contingent of our users are seemingly not intelligent or grown up enough to be able to debate the issues wit.
